Removing Surfpaints acrylic paint from your fiberglass surfboard with or without varnish appliedUpdated a month ago
Removing SurfPaints acrylic paint from your fiberglass surfboard can be done in a few ways, depending on whether the paint has been varnished over or not.
If the Paint Has Not Been Varnished:
Rubbing Alcohol (Isopropyl Alcohol):
Soak a cloth or cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and press it against the paint for a few seconds to soften it.
Wipe away the paint, using a non-abrasive pad if needed.
Acetone or Nail Polish Remover:
Apply a small amount to a cloth and gently rub the painted area.
Once the paint starts to dissolve, wipe it away with a clean cloth and rinse with soap and water.
Vinegar and Warm Water:
Mix equal parts vinegar and warm water and soak the paint with the solution.
Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub with a sponge or non-abrasive pad.
If the Paint Has Been Varnished:
Removing varnished artwork can be more time-consuming but definitely possible.
Electric Sander:
Use an electric sander with coarse sandpaper (80-120 grit) to break through the varnish.
Sand in a circular motion until you start seeing the artwork fade.
Be cautious not to sand too deeply into the fiberglass.
Manual Sanding:
Start with coarse sandpaper (80-120 grit) and work your way to finer grit (180-240) for a smoother finish.
Pro Tip:
If sanding seems too labor-intensive, consider spraying a solid color (like white or black) over the unwanted artwork to create a fresh canvas. This way, you can get creative and design over it with SurfPaints without worrying about complete removal!
